In 1997 the ESRC commissioned Professor Vladimir Flint of the Russian Academy of Sciences to write a book based on his life's work as a scientist and conservationist, focusing on the wide array of endangered and threatened species in the Russian Republic. It details the status, distribution, and conservation needs of virtually every endangered species in Russia. The book, now nearly complete, will be published and distributed in Russia at no cost to Russians. This enormously important work, funded by a generous grant from ESRC Board of Directors member Dr. Dan Brimm, will be translated into English, then published and distributed worldwide by a major U.S. or European press. We expect this landmark book to be the standard reference for conservation of endangered species in Russia for decades to come. The ESRC is honored to be able to make this work possible, and we look forward to seeing the recommendations in the book result in action to save many of these endangered species in the wild.
